The organisation of Nordic collaboration in research and innovation rests mainly on two pillars, one for research, NordForsk, and one for innovation, Nordic Innovation.
A number of other funds under the Nordic Council, the Nordic Council of Ministers and other organisations with a focus on Nordic co-operation also provide grants for research in the Faroe Islands.
NordForsk is an organisation under the Nordic Council of Ministers which provides funding for Nordic research cooperation within all fields of research as well as advice and input on Nordic research policy.
Normally projects must involve cooperation between at least three Nordic countries or autonomous areas. Grants are awarded on the basis of open calls for proposals and peer review procedures.

Nordic Innovation is a Nordic institution under the auspices of the Nordic Council of Ministers working to promote cross-border trade and innovation.
Nordic Innovation funds Nordic projects that boost innovation and competitiveness in the Nordic business sector and lead to commercial and sustainable development.
Projects funded by Nordic Innovation must include partners from at least three Nordic countries and be at least 50 percent self-financed.
Applicants can apply for funding through calls for proposals or through an independent application.

Nordregio is a leading international Nordic research institute in the broad field of regional studies. Nordregio is engaged in developing and improving knowledge exchange between countries through different programmes.

NORA (Nordic Atlantic Cooperation) is an intergovernmental organization under the Nordic Council of Ministers providing financial grants in support of collaborative projects involving partners from at least two of the four NORA countries (Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and Coastal Norway).
NORA supports a variety of different projects relevant to the organization`s overarching goal of creating a powerful North Atlantic region with a strong sustainable economic development.
