The purpose of the degree programme in nursing is to equip students with the competences required to work as nursing practitioners, independently and in teams, as well as in multidisciplinary collaboration. The degree programme shall afford students competences in both theoretical and clinical nursing practice, in line with social, scientific and technological advances and the demand for nursing.

Qualified nurses

• The nursing degree programme takes four years to complete and students who complete it earn the right to use the Faroese title Bachelor í sjúkrarøktarfrøði.
• The English title is Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Nursing.
• This bachelor degree programme has two main components: theoretical learning and teaching at the University, and clinical learning and teaching at hospital wards, old age care homes, as well as in the home care services around the Faroes.

Areas of work for qualified nurses

• Qualified nurses assist patients, families and groups in assessing and harnessing their physical, psychological, social and spiritual potential in their living and working environment.
• Qualified nurses are able to design measures and carry out actions that promote and maintain health and prevent disease.
• Qualified nurses assess, plan, execute and evaluate nursing care in relation to disease and rehabilitation in the context of society.
• Nursing care encompasses the physical, psychological, social and spiritual aspects of life, as well as the way in which they impact on health, disease, disability, suffering and dying.
• Qualified nurses practice nursing both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams.
• Qualified nurses assist patients, families, groups and local society in taking action themselves, when it is relevant. In this way nurses bolster self-confidence and autonomous decision-making and work to promote a healthy environment.
